“Now I’m the Chairman.”

I joined Roby Horticultural Society in 1980. I just pitched up. I didn’t know anyone. I’m independent. I’m quite happy getting on with things. There’s no law against doing things on your own! Because I wanted to learn more about growing, Roby was the place. I’ve been there ever since. Now I’m the Chairman. I’m also in the Cottage Garden Society.  It’s a lovely group. Last year, they took me to one side and said ‘Would you like to be President?’ ‘Why me?’ I said. ‘You’re a long-serving member and I get on with people.’ I felt it was a real honour.
